What’s The Difference Between Major Service and Minor Service?

We all hear it as car owners, don’t we? Come into the auto repair shop for minor service or major service. But what does it mean?

For every car brand, there are unique nuances to what minor service and major service involves. For the most part, vehicles need check-ups and maintenance as their mileage increases. That is why you’ll hear numbers like 7500 miles, 15,000 miles, 30,000 miles, 45,000 miles, 60,000 miles, 75,000 miles, 90,000 miles, etc. But what do these numbers mean?

Of course, you’ll want to consult the Owners Manual for your vehicle for specific information. But generally speaking, minor service is to be performed between every 10K - 15K miles. This minor service generally includes the following:

  • Oil change

  • Tire rotation

  • Tire inspection

  • Brake inspection

  • Lubrication and inspection of chassis

  • Fluid inspection

  • Belt and hose inspection

The goal for the minor service is to check on the vehicle’s health and make sure nothing appears to be dysfunctioning.

When it comes to major service, again, you’ll want to consult the Owners Manual for your vehicle for specific information. With that said, most major services are more involved. Why? Because after 30K miles, your vehicle has likely worn out some parts that are not built to last forever. Therefore, a major service is required if you want to protect the investment you’ve made in your import vehicle. Here is what major service typically includes:

  • Road test

  • Oil change

  • All filters are replaced

  • Spark plugs are replaced

  • Fluid exchange for your transmission, brakes, clutch, power steering, and coolant systems

  • Complete visual safety inspection

  • Battery test

  • Water pump

  • Multi-point inspection recommended by the factory to make certain everything’s in good shape, including the tires, belts, hoses, etc.

The goal for the major service is to make sure your vehicle continues to perform well as it ages and increases in mileage. After all, you spent a pretty penny on your vehicle. Don’t you deserve to drive a vehicle that looks great, is fun to drive, is reliable, and can handle a long road trip at a moment’s notice? When you take great care of your vehicle, it is better equipped to take great care of you.

If your vehicle’s odometer is indicated that some minor or major service is due soon, Import Auto Specialists would be most happy to service your vehicle.
